2018 Suzuki Jimny: Redesigned SUV spied with and without camouflage ahead of Tokyo debut

It looks like Mercedes’ G-Class is getting its mini sibling, yet with a different badge. We are just kidding of course, but a prototype of the redesigned 2018 Suzuki Jimny really reminds on Mercedes’ shrunken G-Class without any doubt. The testing vehicle sports a boxy design, which is characteristic for the German iconic off-roader, but everything else is totally different.

The redesigned Jimny won’t reach North American dealerships. Moreover, we are not so sure whether the U.S. public remembers the rugged 4×4, which was last time here in the early ’90s. Though the high-riding vehicle was known as the Samurai, we highly doubt that anyone really knows what’s this about.

Anyway, the new generation Suzuki Jimny is almost ready and promises to be a really interesting option. The boxy design isn’t everything that the SUV will provide. No, the carmaker will save its off-road abilities by keeping ladder-frame chassis and low-range gearing, as well as Suzuki’s Allgrip Pro 4×4 system.

Suzuki will reportedly offer three different engines under the hood. Even though the small turbo 0.66-liter and naturally aspirated 1.2-liter units don’t sound as too promising, the topping turbocharged 1.0-liter BoosterJet three-cylinder will definitely do the job. We can’t guarantee, but the SUV will likely offer both manual and automatic gearboxes.

Since we have these leaked official images, we know what to expect from the off-roader. As you can see, the SUV will feature round, Wrangler-based headlights and five-slat grille. Below, the 2018 Suzuki Jimny sports a totally unattractive, so to say out-of-date bumper with a pair of tiny fog lamps. The Japanese carmaker will definitely add more today’s features inside. The SUV will sport an infotainment screen at the top of the center console, while there is a pair of redesigned vents below. The 2018 Jimny will allegedly provide a higher level of comfort and more leg and head room, but we don’t believe until we don’t sit inside.

Luckily, that’s going to happen pretty soon, because the manufacturer plans to introduce the all-new 2018 Suzuki Jimny in October at the Tokyo Motor Show.
