If you think that the all-new T-Roc is a small crossover, just wait to see the upcoming 2019 Volkswagen T-Cross. The attractive high-riding vehicle is even smaller thanks to exactly 1.18 inches less between the front and rear wheels. Still, in contrast to the slightly larger T-Roc sibling that is not going to be available in North America, the German automaker plans to offer the T-Cross to the U.S. buyers.
As you can see, the production version of the 2019 VW T-Cross will not take everything from its concept version, which has been previewed at the 2016 Geneva auto show. The main difference is lack of concept’s open top. Even though the carmaker may reconsider to offer the convertible version later the public will see the conventional five-door model first.
The subcompact SUV will have a lot in common with the new Polo. That’s because the crossover uses the same MQB A0 platform, which is underpinning the smallest VWs. The 2019 Volkswagen T-Cross will get both front- and all-wheel-drive systems, which will be mated to manual and dual-clutch gearboxes. The engines will mirror the new Polo, which means that the potential buyers can expect turbocharged three- and four-cylinder options.
Judging by the spy shots, the production version of the 2019 T-Cross will borrow plenty of cues from the convertible concept. Just look into the front end and you will see pretty much the same wide grille and angular headlights, while the camouflage most likely hides air intakes lower. Compared to other pint-sized SUVs and potential rivals which mostly feature pretty odd exterior designs, the T-Cross features a quite ordinary, boxy design. Though, the carmaker will probably try to make it more interesting with a two-tone exterior, so you can expect a contrasting roof.
The all-new SUV will be introduced either at the 2018 Paris Motor Show or a bit later in Frankfurt. In North America, however, the SUV should make its debut at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show.
