2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel Is Definitely Coming in 2017

Mazda is promising a diesel-powered SUV in North America for about a decade. Well, it seems that they are going to fulfill that promise. Moreover, the Japanese car manufacturer confirmed the arrival of the 2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel. The oil-burner will hit the US market in the second half of 2017.

The new generation Mazda CX-5 has made the official debut just a few days ago at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The carmaker said that the base 2.0-liter engine won’t be available anymore. Instead, the amazing crossover will have a sole gasoline option. It’s a 2.5-liter unit that was available already. Still, in contrast to the current 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft, the new model will get at least 200 ponies.

On the other hand, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel will feature a turbocharged 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine. This mill is already available overseas and delivers 173 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque at 2000 rpm. However, the U.S. emissions requirements are very strict, so we expect a bit downsized numbers. Let’s say about 160 hp and 300 pound-feet. The carmaker hasn’t said anything about the transmission, but our insider claims that there will be both six-speed auto and manual gearbox. They, however, promised a class-leading fuel economy.

In contrast to the gasoline model that’s going to keep its price low (at around $23,000), the 2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel will be the more expensive option. We can’s day the exact figure, yet we are pretty sure it won’t start below $28,000.
