2018 Mazda CX-5 Spied Once Again (It’s Totally Redesigned)

A prototype of the next generation Mazda CX-5 has been spied once again, but this time the crossover shows more new details. The new model is still wrapped in psychedelic camouflage, but we can figure out what’s beneath. Moreover, we got the first shots of the new interior, which is definitely getting some interesting features. From what we see, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 will stay manufacturer’s mainstream model without any doubt.

2018 Mazda CX-5: Redesign Details and Tech

The exterior redesigned isn’t actually the redesign, but the completely new design. The new generation compact crossover won’t have anything in common with its predecessor, because the carmaker made a decision to radically change the direction of development, so in place of some mild refresh, the 2018 CX-5 will rather borrow some pretty exciting details from the bigger CX-9. Yes, the new crossover will be just like its bigger brother, but the compact size will make it more dynamic and aggressive. The front-end styling sports rather powerful cues with handsome headlights and CX-9’s five-point grille. The roof seems more slopping, while the rear window appears to be integrated into the C-pillars. Around back, you will find rather unchanged hatch, but also totally new taillight design and more pronounced bumper.

The 2018 Mazda CX-5 won’t get all-new but just updated architecture, so the crossover should get unchanged proportions. The carmaker prepares the new platform that will in the use in late 2019, which means that the upcoming compact crossover can’t get it. However, despite it won’t have more space inside, the interior will be better without and doubt. This is because the cab is getting a completely new infotainment with color head-up display. Drive aids and safety features will be enhanced too, so we are expecting blind spot, lane keep warning systems and a traffic sign recognition system to be offered.

Engines Will Be Just Updated

The new generation CX-5 will have not get CX-9’s new engine. Instead, the compact crossover will get its current options, which will be upgraded a bit. At the moment the 2.0-liter unit delivers 155 hp and 150 lb-ft, while the 2.5-liter produces 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of twist, but the improved units will be better for 5 to 10 percent. Except of more power, the mills will deliver better fuel economy with both, manual and automatic transmission. As for the drive setup, you will still be able to choose between front and all-wheel drive.

Estimated Price and Arrival

We are not sure whether the manufacturer plans to introduce the 2018 Mazda XC-5 at the upcoming Los Angeles auto Show, or in early 2017 at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show, but we are absolutely sure that it won’t change its base price, which currently starts at $22,675.
