Mercedes is definitely working on its own pickup truck. After they previewed the vehicle in the concept from last year in October, we were pretty sure that the production model is coming very soon. Now, when we managed to catch a production-ready prototype, we are convinced that the carmaker plans the official debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. If not, then you can expect to see the 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class early next year.
In contrast to some other times, when we saw just some testing mules, this time the German car manufacturer goes out with the prototype that clearly shows its lines. Okay, it’s still completely camouflaged, but we can figure out what’s happening beneath. Judging by the spy shots, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class will definitely get plenty of details from the concept. Still, the overall design seems to be toned down a little bit, so the hood sports less aerodynamics, while the grille appears to be bigger. In addition, the bumper might feature fog lights, which wasn’t the case earlier with the concept. We also see the roof rails for the first time.
Mercedes’ upcoming truck will share the platform with the new Nissan Navara and Renault’s future pickup, but these models won’t have anything else in common. We are pretty confident that the X-Class is getting the unique treatment inside with plenty of highly luxurious details. Moreover, there is a big possibility to see concept’s cab almost unchanged.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class will get several engine options. The manufacturer will likely keep the concept’s oil-burner option, but it will also introduce several gasoline options, probably four-cylinder and V6. A 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 diesel will be paired with an automatic gearbox and will be able to deliver up to 261 horsepower and 450 pounds-feet of torque. Of course, the X-Class will feature Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.
According to information we have, the 2018 X-Class pickup will not be offered in North America. At least not right away.
