2020 Ford Explorer ST Spied Again, Will Be Ready For 2019 NAIAS

Our photographers managed to catch a prototype of the 2020 Ford Explorer ST a few hours ago, and we have to say right away that we are not too impressed with the Blue Oval’s high-performance mid-size SUV. Truth to be told, the testing vehicle is still under camouflage, so there might be some additional tweaks when the production model arrives. However, from our point of view, the “vanilla” Explorer will look subtly different in comparison with the base model.

Just look the black mesh grille in the front and you will realize what we are talking about. The detail is identical to the one that hosts the entry-level Explorer. There’s just the red ST badge in the corner that set aside the ST model and that’s it. Unfortunately, the automaker has decided not to add the metallic treatment for the front fascia we’ve seen on the Platinum model.

Of course, the 2020 Explorer ST rides on notably larger seven-spoke wheels, which are coupled with wide performance tires. The SUV should use beefier brakes as well, but we are unable to see the details at the moment. Both, the headlights and taillights appear to be smoked, while the roof features black bars. In the back, the 2020 Ford Explorer ST comes fitted with a quartet of exhaust tips.

Like we’ve announced earlier this year, the topper will host a mighty twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine capable of delivering 400 horsepower and as much pound-feet of torque. The mill will come paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission without any doubt, but we still have no clue is there going to be rear-wheel-drive setup or just an AWD.

According to our insiders, the 2020 Ford Explorer ST will be introduced early next year at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show.
