Redesigned 2020 Mercedes GLS Spotted Again

We can’t really say that there is something wrong with the current GLS SUV. However, we find it somehow too pretentious even for Mercedes and again sketchy. Judging by the newest spy shots, this is not going to be the case with a totally redesigned 2020 Mercedes GLS. No, the next-gen model promises a touch of true luxury and closer resemblance to the new S-Class model.

The last testing prototype we’ve caught a few days ago was wearing a quite thin camouflage, so we actually saw pretty much everything we need to know about the 2020 Mercedes GLS. The SUV appears to feature a streamlined exterior design with less bold lines from usual. The new-gen model looks somehow slimmer and with smaller shoulders, but it still looks very powerful thanks to these big and mighty wheels. Up front, Mercedes added a totally new grille and more attractive headlights, while the rear hatch seems to be inspired by the Ener-G-Force concept.

The new-gen GLS rides on the amazing MHA architecture which supports every Mercedes new SUV starting from the GLC and up, excluding the iconic G-Class of course. The new vehicle will use the special air suspension with a Magic Body-like function. The automaker will try to make the drive of the SUV as easy as it can be with the latest features including self-driving systems, which will this time reportedly have map data that will in collaboration with some sensors be able to slow up the car for corners.

Inside, the 2020 Mercedes GLS will get a quartet of HVAC vents and a completely new three-spoke multi-function steering wheel. In addition, the new digital screen will take roughly a half of the dashboard. We are pretty sure that the carmaker plans to use pretty much the same materials for the SUV as it used for the sedan sibling.

The U.S.-specs next-generation GLS is going to be paired with several interesting powertrains. Both a 3.0-liter inline-6 and a 4.0-liter V-8 will be mated to a mild-hybrid technology which will improve power and fuel economy of the SUV. Of course, the German carmaker will not skip the chance to offer a pair of plug-in hybrid models, as well as AMG-treated toppers. No matter which option you pick, it’s going to be fitted with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

We were pretty sure that the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS is going to make its official debut before the end of the year. Now, however, we think that the SUV won’t be ready before early 2019.
