Mazda’s all-new 7-seat SUV that has been introduced in Japan will not arrive in North America after all. Instead, U.S. fans will have to wait for a completely new high-riding vehicle. Okay, the CX-7 nameplate is not totally unknown here, because it was available until 2021. The return of the SUV is highly expected, but the model is not going to be introduced as soon as we thought earlier. No, the potential buyers will have to wait until 2020 to see the all-new 2021 Mazda CX-7.
The crossover will be built in the U.S. at the carmaker’s new plant that will be jointly built with Toyota. There is nothing official regarding the vehicle. Moreover, Mazda hasn’t even confirmed the name of the future SUV. Still, our source is pretty solid, so let’s stick to the story we have.
Anyway, even though it’s going to be made in North America, the 2021 Mazda CX-7 will probably mirror the Japanese three-row CX-8. Okay, the footprint should be reduced, because the CX-8 has pretty much the same dimensions as the CX-9, so there is no logic to offer two same models. Though, regardless of the fact, the SUV should offer an optional third row of seating.
Mazda’s future SUV may share the bones with the CX-8, but it will look a bit otherwise. According to the latest rumors, the next-generation CX-7 will resemble the CX-4. The awesome crossover is available in China only and will stay there for now, but Mazda can and will use the gorgeous lines to make the CX-7 sleek and sexy. The coupe-looking SUV will also host the latest technologies, though it’s too early to talk about the exact details because there’s plenty of time for the arrival.
The 2021 CX-7 will probably use Mazda’s Skyactiv-G series engines. The starting option will be mated to a 2.0-liter unit, while the topper should use a 2.5-liter turbo four with 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of twist. The Japanese three-row CX-8 is mated to a 2.2-liter diesel mill, though the U.S. buyers are not too enthusiastic with oil-burners, so we exclude the option. Instead, the next-generation Mazda CX-7 will add some kind of hybrid unit.
