When we caught a prototype of the new generation Silverado 1500, we knew that was just a matter of time when we will see the completely redesigned 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. However, in contrast to Chevrolet’s half-top pickup truck that was spied while it was freezing in the mountains, the sibling from GMC has been spied in sunny Southern California. Still, those weather conditions won’t make any difference, because these two will definitely continue to share most of the features. Moreover, the design will be the only thing that will separate the 2019 GMC Sierra from Chevy’s next generation Silverado 1500.
We don’t have the first spy shots of the 2019 Sierra 1500, but the guys from Trucktrend.com managed to catch the prototype. According to them, it’s is definitely GMC’s half-ton truck because it has 6-lug wheels, GMC’s signature headlights, and distinctive A-pillar handles which are impossible to be confused with any other carmaker. Still, everything else is deeply buried beneath the camouflage, so we can’t really say what’s new on the exterior.
On the other hand, we know that the redesigned pickup truck gets a number of useful changes under the skin. A new platform will be in charge for weight savings and improved drivability, while the new 10-speed automatic transmission should boost the efficiency. The carmaker hasn’t announced what’s cooking under the hood, yet we are expecting several new and exciting options. They will likely add a diesel V6 mill to compete with Ram’s EcoDiesel, as well as some kind of hybrid drivetrain, which will be based on the eAssist model. Today’s base gasoline 4.3L V-6 engine will be dropped in favor of 3.6L DOHC V-6 that currently powers Canyon, while the 5.3-liter unit should be carried over. The topping 2019 GMC Sierra Denali will probably use a 6.2L V-8. Like we said, the all-new 10-speed auto gearbox will be introduced, but GM’s 8L90E eight-speed automatic will continue to serve lower trims.
