Ram is developing its new-generation 1500. The successor of the popular pickup truck will be ready sometime next year. However, aside it’s making changes to the regular model, the car manufacturer is also doing some tests on the more potent 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel. Actually, we are not completely sure what the mule represents, as it’s featuring some untypical parts.
The testing mule you are looking at is the new Rebel, but it’s using a diesel engine. We assume it’s paired with a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel, which is currently producing 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. However, the carmaker will likely update the oil-burner, so we expect at least 30 additional ponies. The unit will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.
The diesel engine under the hood of the 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel isn’t the weirdest thing here. No, the truck uses rear steel springs and front air suspension. We believe that the carmaker might try to boost payload capacity and tow rating with the new suspension. The pickup also sports quite unusual tires. It’s not too odd to see different tires while the testing goes on, but it’s quite unexpected of seeing Goodyears. Thus far Ram’s trucks were wrapped in Toyo tires, so this might mean that this might be the bed of the partnership.
As you may see, the 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel wears a Limited grille, but don’t be confused with it, because it’s only for testing purpose. Plus, inside the truck sports Laramie treatment, which is also going to change with the arrival of the production model.
The 2019 1500 Rebel won’t offer just the diesel option under the hood. As we have announced earlier, the carmaker could also add a few gasoline mills, including the most powerful supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat engine. This way, Ram will definitely beat Ford’s new Raptor.
