2020 VW Touareg PHEV Gets 367-HP Powertrain

Volkswagen decided to add one more “flavor” to its flagship SUV. The German automaker previewed the 2020 VW Touareg PHEV on a small event in Austria and intends to offer it in China soon. After that, the plug-in hybrid version of the vehicle will hit showrooms across the Old Continent.

Judging by the information we have, the 2020 Touareg PHEV seems to be a quite interesting option. The SUV comes coupled with a four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. More precisely, the 2.0-liter TSI mill delivers 231 horsepower and it’s supported by the gearbox-mounted electric motor that adds 136 horsepower. In total, the powertrain develops 367 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.

The electric motor gets its power from an 18-kWh battery. According to the car manufacturer, by using its electric power only, the 2020 VW Touareg PHEV should be able to travel up to 35 miles, which is not bad at all.

Compared to its non-electric sibling, the PHEV version of Volkswagen’s flagship crossover SUV looks pretty much the same. Okay, there are a few new touches like new chrome surrounds around headlights, but that’s pretty much everything. The automaker could make some cosmetic changes inside as well, while tech should stay identical.

Like we’ve said before, the plug-in hybrid SUV will definitely become available in China in Europe pretty soon. On the other hand, the automaker has not revealed any plans for North America at the moment.
