Volkswagen’s next-generation luxury mid-size SUV has been spotted without any camouflage, which usually means it’s going to be introduced very soon. Now, the 2018 VW Touareg is noticed somewhere in South Africa, but this won’t be the place of its premiere without any doubt. We think it’s going to be introduced either next month at the 2017 New York auto show or later at the next Paris Motor Show. In any case, as you can see, it’s going to be cool and handsome as always.
We have to say that we are not surprised with Touareg’s new design because it sports pretty much the same styling cues as the T-Prime Concept GTE. It features concept’s amazing face with the striking grille and aggressive headlights. This could easily become manufacturer’s signature because they already introduced the Arteon sedan with quite similar treatment.
As we announced several times before, the new generation Volkswagen Touareg will use the MLB Evo platform. The architecture is really fantastic; it already underpins the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, as well as the all-new Atlas crossover, so we know what to expect. Except it will make VW’s mid-size SUV lighter and more rigid, the architecture can be fitted with a number of various engines. Moreover, it can easily accommodate three rows of seating, but the 2018 Touareg won’t have that options. Instead, the crossover will be a tad larger from today’s model.
The platform is basically front-wheel drive, but the mid-sizer will have an optional all-wheel drive of course. The carmaker will add a range of engines, so you will be able to choose between a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and 3.6-liter VR6, as well as some kind of hybrid. Some markets will get diesel options, but this won’t be the case with the US-specs model due to Volkswagen emissions scandal.
Like you see, the carmaker stripped the 2018 Volkswagen Touareg, but we were not able to see the interior this time. Still, this will change very soon, so stay tuned.
