Volkswagen Tarok Concept Previews VW’s Future Compact Pickup Truck

Volkswagen introduced an interesting concept vehicle at year’s Sao Paolo Auto Show. The German car manufacturer previewed a compact pickup truck which will become available in 2020. The interesting model that’s going to be called the Volkswagen Tarok will not be sold in North America, though. Instead, the automaker will most probably offer it in South America first, while the European customers should get the chance to drive the truck sometime later.

According to the manufacturer, the production model will not be too different from the Volkswagen Tarok concept. More precisely, VW will keep the design almost untouched. Meaning, the production model will probably add headlights and lose some LED accents, while everything else stays as it is now. Up front, the handsome pickup sports VW distinctive styling, while the roof hosts a targa-inspired bar. In the back, the model features pretty dominant taillights and catchy bumper. Interestingly, the pickup is mated with the all-terrain tires that promise certain off-road abilities.

Inside, the Volkswagen Tarok concept doesn’t really look like a concept. Things seem to be finished as the cabin hosts VW’s Digital Cockpit. The dash gets a pretty large infotainment screen, which has been placed in the center stack.

The compact pickup truck rides on a quite familiar platform. It has been using MQB underpinnings, automaker’s 4Motion all-wheel drive, and the 1.4-liter TSI. The production model, however, will be paired a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel that pumps out 148 horsepower. The engine will be coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter.
