The current Touareg SUV came refreshed as a 2015 model, but the carmaker already works on the third generation, which will be introduced sometime in 2017 as the 2018 Volkswagen Touareg. The prototype of the all-new version has been spotted several times in 2015, and yet we still have no clear idea what to expect on the exterior styling.
2018 Volkswagen Touareg Gets New Styling and Platform
However, what we know for sure is that the 2018 VW Touareg definitely rides on the different platform. Instead of the current underpinnings, the new generation SUV will get carmaker’s new and flexible MLB Evo architecture, which already made its debut with the 2016 Audi Q7. This means nothing but a huge shed of weight, likely over 500 lbs, and this definitely include a lot of aluminum, as well as more rigid chassis for sure. It’s not anything official, but we have found out that the new seven seats SUV should also get longer wheelbase, which will improve interior space. Speaking of the cabin, the carmaker will equip the vehicle with new safety aids and better infotainment, while the styling should exude more premium look.
Engines and Transmission
Since already offers some great options under the hood of the current model, the 2018 Volkswagen Touareg won’t lack good powertrains either. The new platform brings new possibilities, so we are pretty sure that all future options will be paired to a new a 10-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. The transmission would include better hybrid choices, and since there is a new all-electric Q6 in the works, we can’t disregard this possibility for the new generation Touareg. However, before that the solid SUV will be offered with some four-cylinder, performance and plug-in hybrid options too.
