2017 Opel Meriva is transformed into the crossover (spy shots)

Crossover segment threatens to explode due the constant increasing, while the MPV class slowly dies. The first spy photos of the new generation Opel Meriva show that the vehicle losing its MPV nature and gets this more popular crossover guise. According to reports, the German car manufacturer plans to introduce the 2017 Opel Meriva at the end of this year, most likely at the 2016 Frankfurt motor show in September.

2017 Opel Meriva: Exterior and Interior Styling

Judging by the spy pictures we have, the 2017 Opel Meriva is getting more dynamic bodywork. The front end features more aggressive lines and totally redesigned headlights. The bumper is notably larger, while the prototype hides its new grille and for lamps. The upcoming Meriva shares the platform with the new Citroen C3 Picasso, so these two might share some design cues as well. The former MPV is also losing its distinctive rear suicide Flexdoors and gets a conventional pair, but this is pretty expected since it is becoming the crossover.

We also saw the interior of the 2017 Meriva, at least some part of it. The car looks to have a new dashboard design and the IntelliLink infotainment system with a big touchscreen in the center. As we see it, the interior looks pretty much the same as the Astra new cab.

2017 Opel Meriva: Engine Options

Except of the similar interior, the 2017 Opel Meriva will also offer the Astra’s powertrain option. The base model will drive a 1.0-liter direct injection three-cylinder ECOFLEX turbocharged that produces 103bhp and 170Nm of torque. The new compact crossover will also have an oil-burner, most likely a 1.6-liter diesel unit that develops around 136 hp and 320 Nm. The vehicle will get the standard FWD and optional AWD, and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
