2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport: New Crossover SUV Spied Uncovered

A two-row version of Volkswagen’s Atlas mid-size crossover SUV is ready to hit showrooms. The model leaked online a few hours ago, so we expect to see official images in the coming days. At first glance, the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport SUV looks quite disappointing. There is nothing wrong with it, but compared to its concept version that left us breathless last spring, the production model looks, well, somehow too conventional.

In place of concept’s flashy LED headlights and LED-treated grille, the 2020 Atlas Cross Sport gets VW’s usual design. This happened in the back as well, as the automaker decided to swap the interesting taillights for a set of boring lamps. Compared to the regular Atlas, the Cross Sport version gets a sportier profile. Its rooflines are notably more rakish, so we can count the model as VW’s coupe-SUV.

In contrast to the seven-seat Atlas, the new model offers only five seats. However, there’s plenty of legroom, especially in the back, because the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport features the identical dimensions as its three-row sibling. To be more precise, the new crossover SUV is exactly 93.1 inches long, 78.3 inches wide, and 67.6 inches tall, while there are 117.3 inches between wheels.

The new SUV will get several options under the hood. Some reports claim that the automaker prepares a new plug-in hybrid powertrain that will make debut with the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. Maybe, but it’s not confirmed. On the other hand, VW’s 2.0-liter turbo-4 rated at 238 horsepower will definitely be a part of the fleet, while we think that the manufacturer intends to offer Teramont’s 2.5-liter V6 as well. The option will reportedly be fitted with a mild-hybrid system. A seven-speed DSG will be the standard transmission. On the other hand, 4Motion all-wheel drive will be optional.

The production of the crossover will start in early 2019 at VW’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The German carmaker hasn’t released any pricing information so far, so stay tuned for updates.
