2021 Volkswagen ID 4

A prototype of what seems to be Volkswagen’s electric crossover SUV has been spied testing a few hours ago. The car which is based on 2017’s ID Crozz concept will reportedly be introduced as the 2021 Volkswagen ID 4. Since it comes from the automaker’s ID family, it’s quite clear it’s going to use the company’s modular EV platform, so-called MEB architecture.

The particular underpinnings save plenty of room since it keeps a flat battery in the floor, while the rest of the powertrain is just electric motors, which have been at the axles. The specs of the crossover are still unknown, though our trusted source claims that the 2021 Volkswagen ID 4 should come hooked to several drivetrains. The entry-level ID 4 will allegedly use pretty much the identical system as the ID 3 electric hatch. Meaning, the option will be coupled with a single electric motor that delivers 205 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque. Drive range of the electric SUV will depend on batteries, and as we’ve heard, the model will offer 58 and 77 kilowatt-hours options, so the car should travel 260 and 341 miles before the last sparkle disappears. The topper, on the other hand, will exploit pretty much the same powertrain as the concept form 2017 year. More precisely, the most potent 2021 Volkswagen ID 4 will come paired with a setup delivering 302 hp, all-wheel drive and a drive-range of almost 300 miles. Since it’s an MEB-based car, the 2021 VW ID 4 will be able to handle fast-charging, so the car should be able to recover about 80 percent of its battery in less than 30 via a 150-kilowatt DC charger.

The prototype is camouflaged from the ground up, so it’s pretty hard to figure out what’s cooking.  Still, irrespective of the fact, we can clearly see that the designers have made the front overhang pretty short and the hood very low. They made it possible because there’s no engine under the hood. In addition, the base of the windshield has also been brought forward, while tapers back sharply, As a result, the car gets a smooth and streamlined shape. Unexpectedly, the prototype of the 2021 Volkswagen ID 4 shows a flat roof and more conventional tailgate, as well as even a roof-mounted spoiler, which was not the case with the couple-like concept.

According to VW, the electric crossover will be introduced next year in the United States, so it’s quite clear it’s going to be sold as the 2021 MY.
